Further to my previous post on caregiver burden, which referenced the ZBI Adapted for Pet Owners questionnaire, I've been able to find and complete the actual questionnaire.
Thanks to the wonderful Insight Animal Behaviour Services, the questionnaire is available here.
The rating scale is: Normal 0-17, Mild 18-24, Moderate 25-31, Severe 32+
My score was 43. Ouch.
Quite a confronting outcome, but a validating one too. Yes I find it difficult, but it is objectively a difficult thing to be dealing with.
As I write this, after the summer break and having family support, I'm not finding the burden as heavy as I have at other times. I'm aware it's a rollercoaster ride though, and that even tomorrow I may feel very differently.
Just like George, it's OK for me to have big feelings sometimes too. I'll try not to do my equivalent of barking and lunging at the neighbours, and will try to find more constructive ways to handle those feelings. Just as I'm trying to help George do.
Reaching out for support and doing some non-anxious-dog-centric things (even if that's going in to the office) seem to work best for me.
As does recognising that it's OK for both or either of us to have an off day. Taking a break from training/behaviour modification and just being. And trying to be as understanding towards myself as I am towards George.
Sniffspots are a godsend for stress-free walks and help us both reset each week.
