We recently passed the one year mark since our first appointment with the vet behaviourist.
I was at the end of my tether and George was really struggling. It had been quite the journey to even get to that stage. I knew we both desperately needed help.
At the first appointment, I felt supported, heard, and understood. The advice and information regarding medication is obviously invaluable but the training support and advice has also made a meaningful difference to us.
I implemented better management which immediately started to reduce George's stress levels.
It's been one year of constantly scanning the environment for triggers and hiding from the neighbours. One year of carefully planning walks. One year of more enrichment at home.
One year since he started the first medication.
Below are the medications we have tried (highlighted in orange those he is still taking):
- Fluoxetine
- Pregabalin
- Panadol
- Clonidine
- Trazodone
- Sileo
- Sertraline
- Gabapentin
- Meloxicam
And multiple combinations of the above.
One year of painstakingly logging reactions and observing behaviour.
In one year, I have logged 2826 reactions. It's hard to imagine a time when I won't be logging everything. Imagine the extra time!
What a journey it has been and continues to be. We have our ongoing challenges but there are lots of positives too.
It's a wild ride but I can confidently say that I am very pleased we are not where we were one year ago.
I have learned so much in one year.
Whilst he is still very anxious outside the home, he has moments of joy and adventure. His home has become a place of safety and (mostly) calm.
George is exposed to less stress and recovers from triggers more easily. He rests better. His confidence continues to grow. Our bond gets stronger and stronger.
Bring on the next year!
